Ontario will invest $784 million in additions, repairs and upgrades at 79 schools across the province.
In communities across Ontario, 39 new schools will be constructed and 40 major renovations will take place.
These projects will give way for 157 new childcare rooms and more than 2,700 licensed childcare spaces for children up to 4 years old.
“Ontario is committed to building learning environments that support student achievement and well-being,” said Mitzie Hunter, minister of education. “That’s why we continue to invest in new, renovated, and expanded schools so that every student can learn and grow in a space that enables them to reach their full potential.”
Ontario will provide $10.8 million to help construct a new building for a school in York, Ont. The province will also fund a $4.5 million four-room addition to a school in the same municipality. Each project will include five new childcare rooms with space for 88 children.
“I’m thrilled Ontario is making an important investment for the future of York South-Weston,” said Laura Albanese, member of provincial parliament for York South-Weston. “These high-quality school buildings will help provide local students with better learning environments while supporting the needs of our growing community.”
The goal of the upgrades is to create modern learning environments. Renovations are part of the province’s plan to create fairness and opportunity.
Since 2013, the Ontario government has invested $9.1 billion to help construct over 160 schools and more than 460 additions and renovations.
Ontario is investing up to $1.6 billion over five years to support the creation of 45,000 licensed childcare spaces in schools, public spaces and communities.
